The relationship between literacy and successful learning has never been more significant than in the information age of the 21st century. These skills are fundamental to our development as individuals, shaping our ability to innovate, solve problems and tackle unprecedented challenges.
This course has been designed to give teachers the essential tools to engage children and young people in their literacy learning, making it more relevant, enjoyable and more effective. Focusing on high impact strategies for enhancing literacy through active methods of teaching and learning, and using rich and varied resources, it addresses oral literacy, reading, writing and comprehension skills, and also considers how to integrate digital literacy into learning and teaching.

Who is this course aimed at?
This course is designed to meet the needs of teachers and other professionals working in a wide range of educational settings including mainstream and special education, primary and secondary schools.

This course is approved by the Department of Education and Skills. Three EPV days will be allowed for primary school teachers who take the course during the summer term. Please note this provision applies only to the summer term as per Department guidelines.
Using the National Literacy and Numeracy Strategy as a framework, this course provides a clear overview of literacy while exploring the most effective methods to aid the teaching of reading, writing and oral language through active, exciting teaching and learning approaches. Reading and comprehension strategies are explicitly demonstrated and you will learn how to teach grammar in context, develop vocabulary, improve reading fluency and enhance writing skills.
Teachers will also have the opportunity to evaluate and develop their own proficiency in teaching specific aspects of literacy, both discretely and across the curriculum. This course will provide you with a wealth of innovative and engaging resources and evidence-based programmes are also reviewed and presented. You will also gain practical tools to aid assessment for learning.
