The Inclusive Education and Special Education Needs module serves as the cornerstone of our postgraduate programme, setting the foundation for all participants. This core module aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the principles, philosophy and practice of inclusive education and a framework for supporting diverse and potentially marginalised learners within the education system. International and national perspectives on special educational needs and inclusion are explored and current issues, debates and challenges are examined.
Core Focus Areas
It focuses on developing participants’ knowledge of inclusive education and evidence-informed practices, emphasising diverse and differentiated teaching approaches and methodologies that are underpinned by research findings. Issues around early identification, assessment, and screening are addressed, as well as considerations for the collaboration and modifications necessary to ensure curricular access and participation and to facilitate inclusion at the whole-school level. The module aims to give participants the skills to reflect on their own values and attitudes in relation to inclusion and special educational needs, and to inform and develop their practice.
Insights from Lead Tutor: Rose-Marie Flanagan
Rose-Marie Flanagan, the module’s Lead Tutor, emphasises the importance of equipping educators with the skills and evidence-based approaches necessary to meet the diverse needs of today’s learning environments. According to Rose-Marie, the module provides students with an overview of inclusive practice and pedagogies. It offers practical support by ensuring students will be able to relate the theory of inclusive pedagogies to inclusive practice.
The course content highlights the pertinence of including all key stakeholders in a child’s education and most importantly valuing the importance of student voice. Students who study this module will be equipped with up-to-date evidence and approaches to ensure that they will meet both the strengths and needs of the children they educate. It ensures that students are aware that every learner matters and matters equally (Ainscow, 2024).
Student Experience: Orla Ferguson
I thoroughly enjoyed the Inclusive Education and Special Education Needs Module and felt that Rose-Marie’s guidance throughout the module really helped to inspire me to look inward on the topic of inclusive education.
The key learning I took from the module was that the journey towards inclusive education is ongoing, requiring commitment, collaboration, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Through continued reflection, adaptation and innovation, we can continue to pave the way towards a more inclusive and equitable education system for all children.
Student Experience: Richard Reilly
I found the inclusion module to be both enjoyable and insightful. Rose-Marie was very supportive and generous with her knowledge and experience. Her passion for the subject was evident, which made the sessions engaging. The resources provided have already been beneficial in my professional practice and will continue to be an invaluable asset. The advice to start the assignment early was particularly helpful in managing the workload and allowing time to explore the reading material fully. The sessions were well-structured, creating a logical flow of information. If there were any questions or concerns, Rose-Marie was approachable and promptly responded to emails. Although I was initially apprehensive about this online learning journey, I now feel confident and look forward to the remaining modules.
Conclusion
The Inclusive Education and Special Education Needs module is designed to prepare educators for the challenges and opportunities of creating truly inclusive learning environments. Through a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical application, participants are empowered to make a meaningful impact in their schools and classrooms, ensuring that every learner has the opportunity to succeed.
