What if instead of focusing on the challenges and difficulties of dyslexia we focus on the positives?

This is exactly what Rod Nicolson does in his book, Positive Dyslexia. Using the transformative lens of positive psychology he moves away from focusing on dyslexia as a disability and instead looks at the talents and strengths associated with it and how this potential can be celebrated and nurtured.

“In this book I develop a vision, which I call Positive Dyslexia, where the strengths of Dyslexia are not just acknowledged but actually coveted.”

Individuals with dyslexia are often slow to automatise skills and build neural circuits, especially when it comes to language. This kind of delay can make processing slower and more effortful, but Nicolson shows that it can also confer advantages, and facilitate the development of other valuable skills and talents.

So what are the signature strengths of dyslexia? They include creativity, innovation, social skills, resilience, focus, determination, teamwork, visual/spatial skills, self-awareness, empathy, goal setting and many more.  Using a strong scientific foundation, Nicolson re-frames dyslexia as a set of diverse strengths to be discovered, developed and lived.

Nicolson demonstrates that the strengths that many successful individuals with dyslexia have are precisely those we need in the 21st century. They have developed different ways of thinking and problem solving, and these unconventional talents or ‘talent diversity’ is just what is needed in order to thrive and flourish in modern society. He provides the route and map to harness the positives of dyslexia.
