Today we are celebrating World Down Syndrome Day. The theme this year is #ImproveOurSupportSystems and we will be specifically looking at education as a key support system. Keep an eye on our Facebook, Linkedin and Instagram channels for more!
A strong educational support system for learners with Down syndrome is built on voice and choice. We may not shift the system overnight, but we can shift how we support – by listening, empowering, and creating a space where they are seen, heard, and valued.Dr Ke Ren (Rita), Academic Programme Lead in Special Education, ICEP Europe
Some strategies for implementing this include:
- Consulting with students about their learning experiences and decisions that impact them.
- Using assistive technology and communication tools to ensure all students can express their thoughts, preferences, and needs.
- Focusing on strengths and helping them recognise what they can do rather than what they need support with.
- Emphasizing learning as an enjoyable and meaningful experience, making sure students feel engaged and valued in their education.
- Building strong relationships with students using different strategies:• Greeting students by name and making them feel welcome.• Communicating genuine interest in their thoughts, preferences, and lives.• Letting them know they are seen, heard, and cared for.• Establishing trust so they feel safe to express themselves.• Giving students choices in their learning, reinforcing their sense of autonomy and self-worth.
