Supporting Inclusion in Hong Kong: My Special and Additional Learning Needs MA Journey

Benita Heyburgh completed the MA in Special and Additional Learning Needs with the University of East London and ICEP Europe.
Originally from South Africa, Benita has over 30 years of teaching experience, including 17 years in Hong Kong. She currently teaches a reading and writing programme in English at a government-aided school in Hong Kong. Motivated by a strong belief in inclusive education, she pursued further training in special needs to better support her students and ensure that every learner can thrive.

Why I Chose the MA in Special and Additional Learning Needs

I have always believed that inclusive education is the key to unlocking every student’s potential. To better support learners in mainstream classrooms, I looked for training that was flexible yet in-depth. The MA in Special and Additional Learning Needs offered exactly that. The lecturers were supportive, my peers fostered collaboration, and my dissertation supervisor guided me with encouragement that helped me achieve a distinction.

My dissertation explored how teachers in my school work with students who have special needs. I designed and implemented an in-house training programme, then evaluated its impact. As a result, I observed significant change—teachers’ knowledge, attitudes, and strategies improved, and inclusion became a stronger part of our school culture.

Skills and Knowledge Gained

The programme helped me grow in ways that continue to shape my work:

  • Confidence and patience – I now feel calm and assured when supporting students with additional needs.

  • Supporting self-regulation – I run voluntary recess groups with activities such as LEGO, drawing, and chess, which help students manage emotions and prepare for lessons.

  • Specialising in dyslexia – Inspired by the dyslexia module, I completed Orton-Gillingham training and achieved Level 5 accreditation with the British Dyslexia Association. My next goal is Level 7 training to qualify as an accredited assessor.

  • Collaboration and teamwork – I work closely with colleagues to adapt lessons and find inclusive solutions together.

Impact on My Career

This journey has given me clarity about my career path. Specialising in dyslexia connects directly with my passion for helping students overcome challenges and realise their potential. The skills and experience I gained have strengthened my current role. They have also positioned me to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the learners I support. Most importantly, it has reinforced my commitment to creating inclusive and empowering classrooms. In this way, every student feels recognised, supported, and able to succeed.

Why I Recommend the MA in Special and Additional Learning Needs

I highly recommend the MA in Special and Additional Learning Needs to educators who want to grow professionally while continuing their teaching careers. The programme’s flexibility allows you to balance work and study, while its relevance ensures that what you learn can be applied directly in the classroom. Moreover, the supportive lecturers and practical curriculum make it an invaluable experience.

This journey has not only deepened my knowledge but also given me the confidence to foster inclusive learning environments. For any teacher passionate about special education and inclusion, this programme is an excellent choice.
