Graduate Success Story – Ciara Breen
When I enrolled in the MA in Special and Additional Learning Needs with ICEP Europe and the University of East London back in 2014, I didn’t fully realise just how much it would shape the direction of my career. I was one of the first students to join the programme, and since completing it, my professional life has changed in ways I’m incredibly proud of — becoming a school principal, tutoring in leadership education, mentoring others, and contributing to ongoing research and inclusive school development.
This Master’s truly opened doors I hadn’t even imagined yet.
Why I Chose the Programme
One of the main reasons I chose this course was its structure. I loved that it offered a modular pathway — starting with a Certificate, progressing to a Diploma, and finally the Master’s. My goal from the start was to complete the full Master’s, both as a personal achievement and to support future career progression.
It also aligned perfectly with my role at the time. I was a primary school teacher in a large school with a significant special education department, so I wanted to strengthen my knowledge to support the children and colleagues I worked with.
But flexibility was key. The programme being fully online meant I could balance study around a young family. I often started modules in September so I could use the Christmas break to focus on assignments. Without that adaptability, I simply wouldn’t have been able to do it.
Growing Confidence & Career Progression
As I progressed, I became more involved in special education within my school. The course gave me a deep understanding of effective practice and the confidence to know I was making the right decisions for students.
When I later applied for leadership roles, the Master’s made a real difference. Shortly after graduating, I became a principal in another school. While the subject area itself wasn’t the reason I secured the job, having a Master’s definitely helped me tick that important qualification box.
It also led to opportunities beyond school leadership. I’m now a tutor on the University of Limerick’s Postgraduate Diploma in School Leadership — something I doubt would have been possible without the knowledge, experience and credibility this programme provided.
Modules That Made a Lasting Impact
I really valued the range of modules available, especially the Inclusion module — it has had a lasting influence on how I approach my work today. Inclusion is now a central focus in our school, and we have since opened two ASD classes, something I’m incredibly passionate about.
I also genuinely enjoyed my dissertation. The support throughout that process was excellent. My supervisor guided me with clear feedback, kept me on track with timelines, and was always available when I needed help.
That support made the achievement all the more meaningful — so much so that I travelled to my graduation with my family, a first for me!
A Global Learning Experience
Another unforgettable part of the programme was the international community. My classmates were based all over the world — Irish teachers abroad, educators working in their home countries, and professionals from a mix of school systems.
Learning from diverse perspectives broadened my understanding of global education and strengthened the reflective aspect of my practice.
Looking Forward
I would recommend this course wholeheartedly.
It offered flexibility when I needed it, challenged me academically, and helped shape the leader I am today. Most importantly, it opened countless new opportunities that continue to influence my career.
If you’re passionate about inclusion and eager to progress in your career, this Master’s can absolutely help you do that.
